Spring Gutter Cleaning in NWA: Remove Oak Pollen Before It Becomes Paste

Early spring is the short window between winter debris and the first heavy oak catkin drop. Cleaning and inspecting gutters during this window can prevent a small amount of pollen from turning into a hard, sticky obstruction.

What to Remove Before Spring Storm Season

Inspect every gutter run for pine needles, roof granules, winter twigs, bird nesting material, and compacted leaf residue. Flush downspouts from the top and confirm water exits at the bottom without bubbling back into the trough.

Pay special attention to inside corners. These areas receive concentrated runoff and are often the first places to overflow when fine debris begins to bind together.

Why Oak Pollen Is More Than a Cosmetic Problem

Oak pollen and catkins are light when dry but absorb water quickly. Mixed with asphalt granules, they form a dense paste that can cling to screens, narrow guard openings, and downspout elbows. Once dry, this material is much harder to remove than fresh seasonal debris.

A fine stainless micro-mesh system keeps the material out of the water channel, where it can dry on the top surface instead of becoming a hidden blockage.

Spring Inspection Questions

Ask three simple questions:

  1. Does every section have a visible, consistent pitch toward an outlet?
  2. Does water stay inside the gutter during a hose test at roof valleys?
  3. Is the final discharge point far enough from the foundation and walkways?

A no answer is a repair item before the next severe-weather alert.
