What Are Oak Catkins (Tassels) and Why Are They Different From Leaves?
Oak catkins — also called "tassels" or "oak worms" by Ozark locals — are the male pollen-bearing flower clusters of Post Oak, White Oak, and Red Oak trees. They look like yellowish-brown worm-shaped strings, typically 2–4 inches long.
Unlike oak leaves, which are too large to penetrate most gutter guards, catkins have three properties that make them a unique drainage hazard:
1. They are thin enough to pierce standard screens — The diameter of an individual catkin strand is 1–3mm. Standard vinyl slotted guards have openings of 3–8mm. Catkins slide straight through.
2. They absorb water and expand — A dry catkin weighs almost nothing. Wet catkins swell to 3–4× their dry volume and stick together like wet hair.
3. They combine with shingle grit to form concrete — Roof shingles shed granules constantly. When catkins, granules, and standing water combine in a gutter trough, they form a dense paste that sets hard when dry. This is why your gutters feel like they have concrete in them in May.

Bentonville (ZIP 72712–72716): Peak catkin drop typically March 28 – April 18. Coler Mountain Preserve and Downtown Historic District have the densest Post Oak canopy in the city. Homes within 200 feet of mature oaks fill completely within 5 days of peak drop.
Fayetteville (ZIP 72701–72704): Peak April 3 – April 22. Mount Sequoyah's centennial White Oaks produce the heaviest individual catkin volumes — homeowners report gutters going from clear to completely blocked overnight after a windy evening.
Rogers (ZIP 72756–72758): Peak April 1 – April 20. Shadow Valley Country Club and Pinnacle Hills area oaks drop simultaneously with maple helicopter seeds, creating a compound clog that blocks downspout elbows.
Bella Vista (ZIP 72714–72715): Catkin volume is lower than hardwood cities, but pine needles and catkin fragments combine into a particularly dense mat that standard plastic guards cannot handle.
Why Most Gutter Guards Fail Against NWA Catkins
Slotted vinyl/aluminum (Home Depot, $1–$2/ft): Openings are 3–8mm. Catkin strands are 1–3mm. They slide straight through and accumulate inside the gutter. You now have a guard you cannot clean without removing.

The April Emergency: What Happens If You Don't Act
