Reason 1: Surface Tension Breakdown on Curved Solid Hoods (The Coandă Failure)
Reverse curve systems (such as LeafGuard or Gutter Helmet) rely entirely on surface tension to curl water into a narrow slot. In Northwest Arkansas: - Flash Cloudbursts (150 in/hr): High-velocity water shooting down steep roofs exceeds the surface adhesion limit and shoots straight off the nose. - Pollen & Road Slime: Oak catkin pollen and airborne asphalt shingle oils form a hydrophobic barrier over the metal nose, repelling water away from the intake slot.
Reason 2: Steep Roof Valley Hydro-Impact Without Splash Diverters
Roof valleys concentrate the runoff of entire roof planes into a single narrow converging stream. If your installer placed standard flat guard over a high-volume valley without installing multi-tier aluminum splash diverters, water will inevitably overwhelm the trough and overshoot onto your foundation beds.
Reason 3: Incorrect Pitch Alignment & Reverse Slopes
Gutter guards must be pitched with a slight forward bevel (roughly 5 to 10 degrees depending on roof slope) to allow oak catkins and pine needles to blow off naturally. If guards are installed dead flat or tilted backward, standing water pools on top of the mesh and creates an organic dam.
Reason 4: Internal Drop Outlet & Downspout Clogging
Even if the guard surface is clean, if the drop outlet entering the downspout was not cleared and tested with a digital flow meter before installation, internal back-pressure will force water back up and out over the gutter apron.
